When I first realized that you could do a Google search where film locations were shot I quickly discovered the Sheats Goldstein Residence. I’ve had my eyes on this house for a while. One look at its structure already conveys a strong sense of personality and character. My younger 18-year old self would spend hours researching ways to explore and visit the John Lautner designed home.
Fast forward to now and I finally got a chance to tour the infamous home! –without breaking any trespassing rules! The house generally isn’t open to the public, since one of my friends is currently studying interior design they made an exception for her class. I got to tag along as a result.
Upon entering you’ll immediately notice the repetition of triangles and trapezoids.
In addition to the favorite geometric shapes, you’ll also notice that the house is filled with artwork of the home’s owner and forever residence, the mysterious billionaire James Goldstein, or photos of James with his famous friends.
Going outside reviews a bit of a work out –there are a ton of stairs. However, it nice because it takes you into a hillside filled with luscious green palms and bamboo away from the cacophony of West LA. The yard is even complete with its own James Turrell viewing space “Above the Horizon” and full sized tennis court.
Underneath the tennis courts, the residence features what’s called “Club James.”
As gorgeous and elaborate as the residence is, it’s still isn’t done! The house was build and design by Lautner between 1961- 1963. Today they’re still trying to add an additional pool and outdoor barbecue space. Guess I’ll have to come back another day.
