Sometime in the evening my phone received a series of text messages asking if I was available to shoot in the wee hours of the morning. Turns out Wesley Chan (you might know him from that little filmmaker crew Wong Fu Productions) had a new project he wanted me on board with. Base Gray is Wes’s endeavor that embodies his personal aesthetic through design goods and apparel. The project launched on 02/02 with a limited Zero Solid shirts. Curious readers can migrate over to Base Gray’s blog for more details on Wes’s creative process.
In terms of my own approach for this lookbook I wanted to find a natural grayscale within the locations that we were shooting in. I felt that areas with graphically visual lines organic to a downtown cityscape would match the minimalist vibe of the Zero Solid shirts.
Keeping things minimalist, shot all the images using a Nikon 70-200/2.8 VR II and a Sigma 50/1.4. I like calling my 70-200 “my overcompensating lens” because I tend to shoot simple, tightly framed images at 200mm from very far away. Shooting at 200mm compresses the final image so nicely and the background melts away into buttery bokeh. My wider shots were photographed consistently with the 50mm. I’ve been favoring 50mm recently for composing shots with lots of negative space.
