My New York pal, Rachel Lynch of the I Hate Blonde style blog was escaping the East coast blizzard via a Los Angeles 80-some degree winter. I love photographing this girl. She’s always down to try something a little different and out of the ordinary. For our shoot featuring fairytale-like dresses from Lulus I ditched usual D800 setup and rocked my old Helios 58/2 on a Sony A7s. For additional flare I shot through a prism for all of our looks.

The Helios is one of my favorite old school lens. It’s known for its characteristic swirly bokeh. To mount it onto any present day camera you’ll need a bunch of adaptors. For this shoot I had a m42 to EF mount adaptor and a Metabones EF to E Mount adaptor. Together this hodgepodge of photo gear formed the perfect low-fi, vintage, airy, Since the Helios doesn’t have autofocus it helps to shoot on a monopod. The electronic viewfinder on the Sony also surprisingly makes manual focusing a breeze with focus peeking.
