I’ve made more Vegas trips this year than I did when I was 21! Weeks after driving up the I-15 to photograph Steve Aoki I returned to the rambunctious city to photograph another legend in the EDM scene, Armin Van Buuren. Growing up I’ve heard both his name and music blasted from car stereos and parties. He’s a big deal to a lot of people and yet he’s possibly one of the most down to earth talents I’ve gotten to work with.
We were given about 30 mins to set up for his on-camera interview and photoshoot at OMNIA club. The club lights were on and swirling. I used a 70-200mm which turned all the lights into a beautiful bokeh ball background for Armin’s photos and interview. With bigger names I’m used to getting used to <15 minutes to do both interview and photograph talents, but with Armin he graciously shared his story and gave me time to take his portrait. He’s has a pretty awesome story that reminds us all to continue to be passionate and work hard. Did you know this DJ was also a law student?
I want to stress that the word ‘passion’ is probably most important in that. You have to really, really, really want something. I think in life it’s so much more easy if you’re devoted and dedicated to something. If you like your job — no, not like your job — love your job, you’ll be 200 percent good at it because you’re passionate about it. So, ask yourself on a daily basis: ‘Is what I’m doing right now, is it something I love?’ Because if you don’t love what you’re doing, you’re actually wasting your time — you should try to search for something else.
