My initial introduction to KRNFX (Terry Im,) the reigning champ beatboxer that hails from Toronto, was from the “THE DANCEBOX” collaboration with my other epically talented friend, Mike Song. In the video Terry makes all the sounds and music that Mike dances to using only his mouth. The performance was inspiring, intricate, and hilarious. –I had to photograph him someday! I met Terry last fall and with mutual appreciation for each other’s work we decided to collaborate on a shoot 🙂
I’ve been dying to experiment with a projector for some time now. Since KRNFX’s talent is quite unique, particular, yet simultaneously free-flowing I wanted to project abstract visuals/environments that had a sense of depth and dimension, but maintained a certain flatness. I bought on Jon Shih, who is constantly putting up doodles and typography samples on his instagram, to join the collaboration by creating the patterns, graphic design, orgasmic color explosions. The projector was connected to Jon’s laptop and displayed the visuals onto the seamless backdrop. We project the visuals through Photoshop, which allowed to burn/dodge, color correct, rotate (–anything you name it!) the images in real-time. I shot tethered to get live feedback on the images. This helped out tremendously given the constant changing refresh rate from the projector altering the colors and for me to create an empty plate. Because of the position of the projector Terry’s body would cast a very defined and harsh shadow. In some of the images I preferred not to have these shadows present, thus an empty plate and a little Photoshop was in order:
I’m super stoaked with this set of images we created. Enjoy!
